Less Graffiti, More art – Shipley

One of the priorities for the Shipley MYPs was to decrease the amount of offensive graffiti that marred the parks in the Shipley constituency. They implemented this by investigating the parks and places in Shipley where they found many examples of offensive graffiti.

Their next project was to apply for funding in order to improve the parks they identified. The parks containing the worst vandalism were Crowgill Park, Menston Park and Windhill Park. The Shipley MYPs then chose to mask the offensive graffiti with art made by young people. They promoted the events by making posters asking young people to come along and help to make their parks better places. The young people would use graffiti paint to spray positive messages on skate ramps. The MYPs then held an arts night at Shipley Youth Café where young people were encouraged to find other methods to express their feelings through art rather than to vandalise areas.
