Intergenerational event – Keighley
The MYPs in Keighley organised an intergenerational event in November 2010 with a twist.
The theme for the event was “The Generation Game” The venue for the event was Farish House in Keighley, an Incommunities sheltered scheme.
The event consisted of two activities, cake decorating
and cross generation – cross stitch. We invited all members of BKYP to
attend this event, and when we got started we split the MYPs up so each table
had a mix of older people and young people. The cake decorating task was
where our host – Ibby – came into his own as his own version of Bruce Forsyth.
Each table had to come up with team names, the three team names were, Young at
Heart, The Young ones and The Generation. “Bruce’s” glamorous assistants
displayed the pre decorated cake to each team, whilst “Bruce” explained the rules
of the task. Each team had 20mins to recreate the pre decorated cake
using the materials provided – the catch, the materials provided were not the
same materials used to create the pre decorated cake so each team had to
improvise a lot.
This was a great task and every person in each team
contributed. There were a lot of laughs and food colouring mishaps but at
the end of the allocated time every team had created their interpretation of
pre decorated cake. “Bruce” and his glamorous assistants had the arduous
task of judging the cakes, once all the points were counted in, "Bruce”
gave the “scores on the doors” and Young at Heart were declared the winners. After a tea break
the next task was the cross stitch cross generation activity. In the same
teams each person had to cross stitch their name and 3 positive personality
traits they had but not put their age on the piece. The aim of this was
to show that age doesn’t determine what sort of person you are and in so
challenge stereotypes generations may have of others. This was a change
of pace compared to the cake decorating but it was just as successful, everyone
either produced a cross stitch or helped other who haven’t cross stitch before.
This work will be framed and displayed at Youth Service Headquarters and
another copy at Farish House.
