Permission granted for Clayton Youth Shelter
MYPs from Bradford West have secured funding and permission to build a youth shelter in Victoria Park, Clayton.
Following a campaign by Bradford West MYPs Clayton Urban Village have given permission for the construction of a youth shelter in Victoria Park. Young People at the Bradford West area conference had asked their MYPs to work on getting a youth shelter in Victoria Park to give young people a safe place to hand out. The permission and funding from the Urban Village is a massive step forward towards the MYPs delivering on this priority.
The MYPs worked closely with the Council's Parks and Landscapes department to draw up plans for the shelter and carried out a consultation with local people and businesses.
The youth shelter will be installed for a six month trial period to prove to local people that young people will take ownership of the shelter and ensure it remains in good condition.
Bradford West MYP Wasiq Khan said "we have worked hard towards obtaining the youth shelter, it is very pleasing to have such a positive outcome."
The plans for the shelter were supported by the Police and some local Councillors. Bradford West MYP Jonathan Crouch said "It was crucial for adults and young people to work together for the youth shelter to go ahead."
UPDATE: After objections from some local residents the youth shelter plan was rejected at the urban village meeting. The MYPs are currently working with young people in Clayton to decide what to spend the money on.
